Visit the August Wilson Blog!

Welcome to was established in 2002 to serve as a scholarly resource for anyone interested Mr. Wilson's life and work. My intention is to accept contributions from writers around the world in an effort to promote Wilson scholarship and perhaps, one day, start a scholarly journal.  If you would like to contribute, please contact me through email.

By way of introduction, my name is Dr. Michael Downing and I am Associate Professor of English at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania (about an hour north of Philadelphia).  I have been studying Mr. Wilson's life and work since 1992, when I lived and worked in Pittsburgh.  At that time, I was teaching, working on my Ph.D. and attending numerous Wilson plays at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre.

Since then, I have taught, published, delivered scholarly presentations, and written a dissertation on August Wilson.  I am also the coordinator of the August Wilson Society through the American Literature Association and the editor of the August Wilson Blog.

You will find various resources on the pages that follow.  I recommend starting with the "Life and Works of August Wilson" slide presentation under the "Plays and Bio" tab.  This is intended as an educational primer on August Wilson.

My current active projects include chairing the first-ever August Wilson Society panel at ALA,  collaborating on an August Wilson documentary with the August Wilson Center and WQED in Pittsburgh, writing synopses for all of The Century Cycle plays, and developing an essay on Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

If you have questions or would like to contribute, please contact me via email.

Dr. Downing
